Robert Smalls by Ken Raymond
to quote Ken Raymond
On this day in history, April 5, 1839, Republican Congressman Robert Smalls was born. Smalls, who was born a slave, represented South Carolina’s 5th and 7th districts.
While forced to serve the Confederate Navy, Smalls led a group of slaves to take over a gun ship and turned it over to the Union Navy. Smalls, who served for 3 terms in Congress, also served in South Carolina’s state house and state senate.
Smalls had to endure the violence of white supremacists Democrats each time his name was on the ballot.
